Shape it Hot, Cut it Cold
This class will investigate glass blowing and cold working techniques through a sculptural lens. Thinking out of the round, we will focus on pattern, form and the color application processes. We will explore sculpting closed forms in the hot shop using the anatomy of the vessel as a launching point; expect to push the bubble in a whole new direction. In the cold shop we will explore engraving and carving glass as a means to explore texture, color, surface and form. Carving techniques using various tools including glass cutting and engraving lathes will be shown, formulating new approaches to sculpting in the cold shop.

Ethan Stern: Inscribing Surfaces
On View October 28, 2017 – January 31, 2018
Inspired heavily by the heritage of cut crystal, this body of work explores an array of patterns beveled into the surface whose angles refract light into and through the form. In partnership with the Traver Gallery.

With this new exhibition, Seattle-based artist, Ethan Stern, continues to explore how his blown and carved glass sculptures can manipulate and alter light, and how he, as a sculptor, can use light itself as a medium. In a dramatic shift, Stern has opted to diverge from the color-laden forms for which he is known. By using only clear glass and a traditional glass-cutting lathe Stern has created a body of work that is utterly contemporary and unique. The flattened and intensely-carved vessel forms create a prismatic lattice of light; reflecting color from their surroundings creating surface that change dynamically with every shift in orientation. Stern's move away from adornment and toward an increasing distilled methodology highlights the essential qualities of the material and his process, and draws our attention directly to his artistic objective: creating dynamic sculptural forms that hold and activate light. These new sculptures are timeless in their directness and they are enormously successful. We are thrilled to present this exhibition in our gallery and look forward to introducing you, our collectors, to Ethan Stern's most recent body of work.

EXHIBITION
ART IN EMBASSIES
Grey Flag Pair was chosen by the American Ambassador to Uganda, Deborah R. Malac as part of an exhibition at her residence in Kampala, Uganda. The exhibition will last 3 years. For five decades, Art in Embasssies (AIE) has played a leading role in U.S. public diplomacy through a focused mission of vital cross-cultural dialogue and understanding through the visual arts and dynamic artist exchange. The Museum of Modern Art first envisioned this global visual arts program in 1953, and President John F. Kennedy formalized it at the U.S. Department of State in 1963. Today, AIE is a public-private partnership engaging over 20,000 participants globally, including artists, museums, galleries, universities, and private collectors, and encompasses over 200 venues in 189 countries. Professional curators and registrars create and ship about 60 exhibitions per year, and since 2000, over 58 permanent collections have been installed in the Department’s diplomatic facilities throughout the world. -Art in Embassies Mission Statement http://art.state.gov/ |

WORKSHOPS 2016
W E S T C O A S T
MAY 16TH - 27TH SESSION 1
PILCHUCK GLASS SCHOOL
OUTSIDE OF THE (ROUND) BOX
Working between Hot and Cold Shops, students will take a sculptural approach to integrating form, pattern, and surface. Focusing on closed forms, students will be challenged to break out of the round and think about the bubble in new ways. Demonstrations will include hot-glass shaping with graphite and cork paddles, and carving at the lathe with diamond and stone wheels. Students will be encouraged to research, draw and approach the class as an experiment in strengthening designs, concepts, and teamwork. Intermediate/Advanced. Scholarship Applications due February 3rd.

The Crosscut series takes a nod from cut glass produced in American factories and design houses in the late 19th century. This type of work had been produced all over the world for many centuries but American brilliant cut glass made a name for itself around this time for its exquisite form and technical prowess.
At the dawn of the 20th century Glass factories lined the East coast but by the start of WWI the American cut glass industry had all but disappeared. With advances in industrial technologies like press molds and automation; the role of the Glasscutter was diminished. The lifespan of American cut glass; cut short by industry and war also succumbed to the austerity of the time and quickly went out of vogue. Today, you can almost count all the contemporary American Glass cutters on two hands and be hard pressed to find a factory that is hand cutting anywhere in the United States. This new series of works created for the Crosscut Exhibition could be viewed as a partial revival of American cut glass. Not on a scale akin to past centuries and not one created in a factory but one that connects with a new generation engaged with handmade objects that are formed in the furnace and cut at the wheel. These pieces function not as vessels to hold things but containers to hold light. They are one unique sculptures produced through a creative process of manipulating the glass both hot and cold. They are bastions of the traditions and techniques of factory cut glass while at the same time representing a new direction inspired by the intersection of geography, architecture, and industrial design. |
